If you are unfamiliar with the history of the Corps of Royal Military Police - a brief explanation:

The Commanding Officer of The Corps of Royal Military Police is the Provost Marshal (Army).

The office of the Provost Marshal is historically very ancient, dating from 1511 when King Henry VIII appointed Sir Henry Guyldford as his Provost Marshal.

In 1629 King Charles I in his Articles of War issued a declaration that '..... the Provost shall have a horse and soldiers to attend him .....' . This historic document is known today as the RMP Emblazonment.

The office of the Provost Marshal pre-dates the earliest of the UK's modern Police Forces.Royal Military Policewomen on parade (11Kb)

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the Colonel-in-Chief of The Corps of Royal Military Police. The appointment of Provost Marshal is the prerogative of the Monarch and remains so to this day.

Every Officer, Warrant Officer and NCO of The Royal Military Police (RMP) is the personal representative of the Provost Marshal.

In addition to their military training, all Royal Military Policemen and women are fully trained Police Officers in UK legal and law enforcement procedures. Members of RMP serve throughout the world, wherever the British Army is deployed. RMP duties range from routine foot and RMP Nco on duty in Iraq 2003 (12Kb)mobile patrols, mounted police patrols, traffic and operational duties with the Army in the Field, static security duties, escort vehicle duties for Royalty and Very Important Personages (VIPs), close protection of Royalty and VIPs, crime investigation and the enforcement of good order and military discipline (law enforcement), and Special Investigation Branch duties. Suitable Officers and NCOs can apply or may be selected to work as Instructors at the RMP Training Centre.
